Happy Mothers'
Day!!
This morning
we got up and Porter and Jackson gave Katie cards I made for them
to give her -- each with a photo that seemed to capture their personalities
at this stage of the game! Katie loved them. We went to mass early
and afterward had her mom over for bagels.
This afternoon
we'll go over to Tom and Laura's for a family gathering, and my mom
and Row will drop by over there. I'm making a ham that we picked up
on our recent trip to Louisiana, and I'm doing the recipe that Carolyn's
mother used to make way back when. She should like it -- bring back
memories -- that's our Mothers' Day gift to her this year.
Anyway, speaking
of our trip to Louisiana, we took a weekend get-away last weekend
to go to Baton Rouge to see my aunt and Katie's aunt / uncle and cousins.
We coordinated it with Jazz Fest in New Orleans and took a day to
go there and see some great gospel, blues and that head ParrotHead
himself, Jimmy Buffett! It was HOT, the music was great and the food
was just what we wee craving!
On a sadder note,
though, we found out when we got back that our priest, Msgr. Jamail,
died last Saturday night. He was a truly great man and I am blessed
to have formed a friendship with him. He was instrumental in bringing
me into the Catholic faith, he married Katie and I, and he baptized
Jackson. He has been there for each major event in my adult life --
and was a constant reminder of how dedicated service to others is
not only noble, but a key to life's happiness. He always told us that
God loves us, and I'm glad to have had his love for us as well.
So, now we move
on -- and hopefully the next priest to take the challenge of leading
St. Vincent de Paul church will put his own stamp on our lives and
that of our children. I know Msgr. will be watching over us each step
of the way. And hopefully both our boys will be open and aware in
case God calls them to serve in the priesthood. They have a good example
in James Jamail, I can tell you that.
Enough of the
sad and introsepctive, though -- I've got a ham to cook!
